National Vegetarian Week, run by The Vegetarian Society, will take place on 19-25 May. Around 1,900 schools are expected to take part by serving up vegetarian food and passing on information to pupils.
This record participation reflects the high interest in vegetarianism among the age group. Ten per cent of 15 to 18-year-old girls told the researchers for the Food Standards Agency's most recent national diet and nutrition survey that they were vegetarian or vegan. Remarkably, this was 10 times as many as boys in that age group, suggesting that it is less socially acceptable for boys to cut out meat.
