Numbers game: Musical youth

1 min read

In a study conducted for Youth Music, only eight per cent of school music heads and community music leaders said young people of minority ethnic groups are more likely to participate in music-making activities.

Jane Dancer, regional co-ordinator for Youth Music in the Northeast, said: "The situation here reflects the findings. Ethnic minority communities need support to access wider community services. The North East Cultural Diversity Arts Forum has just been formed to support culturally diverse groups in the area that wish to access music activities."

White British groups have a 90 per cent likelihood of participating, compared with 47 per cent for Black Caribbean groups and 19 per cent for Bangladeshi groups.
