The figures, recorded at the end of 2004, show that 73.3 per cent of 16-year-olds decided to stay in education this year. The number of 16- to 18-year-olds in education and training also hit an all-time high of 1.5 million. But the percentage of 16- to 18-year-olds in education and training was 75.4 - down from 77.6 per cent 10 years ago.
Rates of participation in education and training among 17- and 18-year-olds are also lower this year than 10 years ago, with rates of 79.1 per cent and 59.6 per cent compared with 82 per cent and 60.3 per cent respectively.
