Young people are struggling to continue their education while holding down a job because they are unaware they could claim financial help from the Government. A survey of 615 young people aged 16 to 18 by YouGov for the Learning and Skills Council found that 43 per cent of young people work an average of 14 hours a week while continuing their education. The vast majority, 86 per cent, say that they have no choice because they need the income. A worrying 11 per cent claim that their studies have been hindered.

But nearly 40 per cent did not realise that they could claim the education maintenance allowance (EMA) to help them finance their studies.
