The findings were in a report called Purpose, Optimism, Belonging: Supporting the Transition to Adulthood, commissioned by new charity the Young Adult Trust. It found only one in five young people were confident about becoming adults.

The independent charity, which was launched by Conservative leader David Cameron last week to provide personal development initiatives that support transitions into adulthood, also shows that many respondents believe legal age limits should rise in certain areas.

Of those surveyed, 85 per cent would raise the legal smoking age limit from 16, while 86 per cent would increase the minimum age for marriage.

However, only 36 per cent of respondents supported reducing the voting age to 16.
