Numbers game: Social exclusion

Newspapers based their coverage on Office for National Statistics figures, citing 1.1 million 16- to 24-year-old NEETs in the UK, a statistic that remains unchanged since January last year when it was published in the Labour Force Survey.

The media's discovery of the term appears to have been sparked by the circulation last week of government figures on 16- to 18-year-old NEETs by think-tank the Local Futures Group. The figures, published in February, show the highest percentage of 16- to 18-year-old NEETs was in central London, where they accounted for 13.1 per cent of young people. Data gathered from Connexions at the end of November last year show an England-wide NEET population of 127,710 16- to 18-year-olds.
