NUMBERS GAME: Care-leavers' grades

Of the 6,400 young people who left care in 2002-03, less than half gained at least one GCSE or GNVQ, compared with an average of 96 per cent of all Year 11 children. And only six per cent of care-leavers achieved five GCSEs at grades A*-C.

Although the figures are below the national average, they are a slight improvement on last year, when only 41 per cent left care with at least one qualification.

Boys performed worse, with only 37 per cent gaining at least one GCSE, the report, Care Leavers 2002-03, England, for the Department for Education and Skills found.
