The Destinations survey, carried out by Leeds Careers, a division of careers advice company igen, showed that 35 per cent stayed on at school or sixth form, while 31 per cent went on to further education courses.
This is almost a tenth fewer than the number who stayed on at school in 1993, while the number going on to further education has risen by almost 15 per cent.
The biggest change since 1993 was the number of young people in Leeds completing statutory education, which has risen by a fifth. However, the authors say this could partly be attributed to the growth in the population of 15- and 16-year-olds in the city.
