NUMBERS GAME: Marriage

1 min read

The younger generation found the prospect of commitment particularly daunting. Only 11 per cent of men who married in 2001 were aged under 25, compared with 26 per cent in 1991, while just 21 per cent of women marrying in 2001 were 25 or under, compared with 41 per cent in 1991.

Overall, marriage rates continued to fall for both men and women. The number of unmarried men aged 16 and above who were willing to tie the knot fell from 29.5 in 2000 to 27.8 in 2001. The corresponding fall for women was 25.7 in 2000 to 23.8 in 2001.
