Northern Ireland: Reshuffle must not delay strategy

Maria Eagle, Northern Ireland's new children's minister, must prevent further delays to the country's long-awaited children's strategy, charities have warned.

The publication of the strategy, which was due on Thursday, has beencancelled due to the reshuffle. Eagle, previously junior children'sminister in England, has also been appointed education minister.

Eagle's ministerial portfolio at the Northern Ireland Office includesthe Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the Department forEmployment and Learning and the Department of Enterprise, Trade andInvestment. She replaces Lord Jeff Rooker, who was popular with NorthernIreland's children's sector, and was also responsible for itsanti-poverty strategy.

Sheri Chamberlain, programme director for Save the Children, welcomedEagle's appointment and experience. But she hoped the change of ministerwould not lead to further delays in publishing the long-awaitedchildren's strategy, and that the impetus behind Rooker's work on childpoverty would not be lost.
