John O'Doherty, 21-year-old chair of SDLP Youth, wrote to the board to propose the establishment of young people's sub-committees as part of the police's District Policing Partnerships, which work with local authorities and communities.
"In my district policing partnership in Magherafelt I am the only one who is under the age of 40," he said.
David Jackson, director of community affairs at the board, said: "It is a positive idea and it could happen in the near future. We will be putting out a strategy to the new board, which will be cascaded down to district level." Partnerships would then decide for themselves how to engage young people, he said.
