Northern Ireland: Commissioner is urged to lobby to protect child rights

1 min read
Northern Ireland's children's commissioner has been urged to mount a vigorous campaign to ensure that children's rights are better protected by law.

Nigel Williams should "lobby intensively" to ensure that domestic law incorporates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, according to a major report produced with the help of more than 1,200 children.

He should also fight for the inclusion of "a strongly worded and detailed clause protecting the rights of children and young people in the Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland". And he should place a greater emphasis on children's right to play by drawing up a national strategy on play.

The recommendations are contained in a report by Queen's University, Belfast, published this week on behalf of Williams.

Williams said: "The publication of this report represents a milestone in children and young people's rights in Northern Ireland. For the first time there is a serious academic examination of how Northern Ireland measures up against international standards.
