The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006 ensures that businesses cannot discriminate or deny goods and services on the basis of sexual orientation.
Sean Moran, project officer at the Rainbow Project, which runs a support project for young gay and bisexual men in Derry, said: "The legislation is good news for our young people as some of them have been refused entry into bars and clubs - even onto a bus. Now they have the law behind them so they can challenge that, and we will support them."
Similar legislation for the rest of the UK is expected to come into force on 6 April. However, gay rights campaigners believe it does not go far enough.
