Last month's fatal shootings in Israel provided a deadly reminder that homophobia is a dangerous force that needs to be countered at source. Alongside that, of course, is the need to provide support and advice to gay and lesbian young people and anyone who is questioning their sexuality.
Stonewall is the lesbian, gay and bisexual charity formed in 1989 in the wake of the notorious Section 28, which outlawed the promotion of homosexuality, particularly in schools. The charity takes on a range of campaigning and education roles, and its website www.stonewall.org.uk includes resources for its Education for All campaign, which aims to tackle homophobic bullying in school. These include facts and figures from original research, case studies and guidance for young people, youth workers, teachers and parents. There's also a short film that gives educators hints on how to respond when a young person is seeking to discuss their sexuality.
