NCB Now: VCS Engage maps engagement

1 min read
VCS Engage has completed a comprehensive mapping exercise, revealing the level of voluntary and community sector engagement in the delivery of children's services, within each of the nine Government Office regions.

While many Government Offices have shown a positive commitment toengaging with the sector, this is not always reflected at local level. In reality, there are significant differences in how local authoritiesare engaging the sector in the planning, commissioning and delivery ofservices.

Some local authorities have developed structures to facilitate voluntaryand community sector participation, but others have failed to developany formal strategy. Evidence suggests that where there is a stronginfrastructure, there is more effective engagement.

Despite this, there is significant underinvestment in voluntary andcommunity sector infrastructure. Small organisations, Black and ethnicminority and parenting groups, were highlighted as particularlydisengaged, or with little infrastructure support.

The VCS Engage programme will offer training and support packages tohelp local authorities and the voluntary and community sector developeffective working partnerships. Packages will also be tailoredspecifically for VCS organisations working in parenting, as well as forBlack and ethnic minority service providers.
