The recession is already starting to affect all of us, and sadly there is more to come. Unemployment puts increasing pressure on children and families, and we can expect to see an increase in demand for family support services, youth services and financial support.
Public expenditure budgets are already under pressure, and can expect to contract for some years, so children's trusts will have to manage significant budget reductions, while voluntary sector organisations also face the prospect of a downturn in most of their sources of funding.
We need to find strategies for handling the recession that do not concentrate cuts on the weakest, and which use evidence to work out how to continue to improve outcomes. At a time when our sector runs the risk of fracturing and becoming more competitive, we need to find ways of working together to respond.
