NCB Now: Landscape of children's services

NCB's chief executive Sir Paul Ennals has been invited to speak at the forthcoming North of England Education Conference in Blackpool next January.

Sir Paul's presentation will consider what we have learned since the introduction of Every Child Matters changed the landscape of children's services. Many changes have been positive, some not so.

Every Child Matters tapped into the instincts of the best teachers, who understand that children's needs do not come wrapped in separate compartments, and that pupil wellbeing translates directly to improved attainment. But it introduced a system into schools that at times was clumsy. Now, as the targets, regulations and inspections are stripped away, and school priorities are refocused on educational attainment, we need to think about how to retain the best of what we have done.
