NCB Now: Peal in practice at Suffolk County Council

1 min read
In 2008, NCB member Suffolk County Council carried out targeted work to improve the learning support parents could provide to their young children.

The staff began by analysing the Early Years Foundation Stage profile data within the Sure Start children's centres reach area. Analysis showed excellent results for children in the Ark Children's Centre, Lowestoft, despite the centre's location in one of the most deprived areas in England, and suggested a direct link between the early targeted support for parents and improved learning outcomes for children. Further research suggested the centre worked best with parents in their own homes. Staff and volunteers modelled good play and promoted positive behaviour, and once parents felt confident enough to visit the centre or library, they were introduced to services that promote learning through play.
