"In Sutton services for Traveller children are highly regarded. In 1999collaboration between the Traveller Education Service and the policeresulted in the creation of the Sutton Traveller Forum. Six years onthis forum is now chaired by a senior councillor and regularly attendedby members of the Traveller community.
"The forum's discussions focus on real challenges for the community'such as domestic violence, social isolation and communityempowerment.
The result has been a string of positive outcomes including visits bythe mayor and exciting plans for a play area.
"Young people within the Traveller community are now engaging in newopportunities including access to play and youth services, secondaryeducation and family learning residential trips, with two young peoplebeing employed by Sutton as play workers.
