Our best practice: The Great Outdoors

Bicton College, East Devon, organised and hosted The Great OutdoorsConference in July, which promoted the benefits of outdoor spaces forchildren of all ages and abilities.

Outdoor environmental play and activities are particularly close to themission of the outdoor leisure department staff at the college, where aunique course incorporates early years care and education and playworkqualifications with some forest school experience, as well as sailing,canoeing and high ropes challenges.

The conference was funded with assistance from the Devon early years anddevelopment childcare partnership, and Zero-14 plus. Speakers includedearly years consultant Margaret Edgington on the importance of outdoorexperiences for children; Sheila Sage, early years principal inspector,on embedding forest school in mainstream practice; and Martin Maudsley,on playing on the wild side.
