NCB NOW: Member Focus - Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council

Our best practice "In the past 18 months we have been delivering 'Finding Solutions' to Gateshead children and families - an early intervention service developed by our access and assessment team.

Finding Solutions offers families the opportunity to work with two social workers on a self-referral basis, to reduce the impact of difficulties they face. The service users determine the focus of sessions and social workers identify and develop family strengths.

More than 60 families have used the service and re-referral rates have been very low. Responses suggest that results in over 90 per cent of cases have been positive, improving outcomes.

Two experienced members of staff, Viv Hogg and John Wheeler, have been seconded to our Trailblazer Information, Referral and Tracking project, 'Passport to Services', to develop solution-focused therapy on a multi-agency basis. They are linking this work with the Children's Trust project team and with Green Paper themes such as lead professional, common assessment and multi-agency teams."
