Susan Pagella explores counselling for carers.

Susan Pagella is an independent therapist with psychotherapy practices in London and Hampshire. She has a special interest in trauma and five years' experience of working with people who have been refused help elsewhere - including teenagers.

Pagella recently conducted a research study exploring the need for counselling and psychotherapy for carers of looked-after children in institutional settings. Having been involved in educational settings as a counsellor and therapist, she was aware of the psychological damage professionals can experience while working with emotionally disturbed young people. During her research, carers talked about feeling unprepared and the surprise resurfacing of their own childhood issues, such as bullying. Many carers had no idea that they would encounter such a high level of abused children - yet no training was provided in order to help them cope.
