Our best practice "We have been piloting an area-based approach to co-ordinate the support of agencies for children's educational achievement.

"Schools have been organised in clusters to ensure consistency of support service personnel. Multi-agency meetings explore the issues facing individual children and establish collective solutions.

Where there are gaps in provision, we make creative use of alternative therapies, counselling and mental health initiatives. Through the local ONTRACK programme teachers have been trained in the delivery of the PATHS curriculum, which promotes emotional literacy in children, based on successful practice from the USA.

"Schools and partner agencies are working together within the area's comprehensive regeneration programme to define the concept of protective schools - which protect children against under-achievement and promote resilience. This in turn will determine optimum ways of working for the new service.
