Sunfield

Our best practice: Working with families

Sunfield is a residential school that caters for 71 children, aged six- to 19-years-old, with severe and complex learning difficulties. The school has won a coveted National Training Award in recognition of a training programme that transformed staff attitudes towards working with families.

The family are the first educators of a child and when formal education comes to an end they become the strongest advocates too. Therefore it is essential that family members are always informed, considered, engaged with, and heard throughout the education process in order to achieve the best outcomes for the child.

Sunfield's training was designed to help staff to understand the emotional needs of families and the impact on them of placing their child in a residential setting.
