NCB Now: Looked-after children want views heard

1 min read
A group of four looked-after young people from Voypic (Voice of Young People in Care) talked about how their views should be used to improve the services they receive at NCB's annual Northern Ireland Children's Conference, which was held in Dunadry on 6 April.

Two members of the group, Jo Irvine and Olinda Santin explained that as Voypic sessional project workers they work alongside project co-ordinators to ensure that care experienced young people have their say on services.

They talked about how this role has given them valuable experience and boosted their self-confidence. "There is a definite need for participative work with children and young people in Northern Ireland," Vivian McConvey, Voypic's director, commented.

The event was chaired by Nigel Williams, Northern Ireland's commissioner for children, and by Teresa Devlin, head of research and service review with the children's commissioner.

Speakers included Ruth Sinclair, NCB research director, and Karen McBye, former Blueprint team member, who outlined a project undertaken by the Blueprint Team in England to identify the characteristics of a child-centred care system and discussed its relevance to Northern Ireland.
