NCB Now: Headlines 'can distort the message'

1 min read
Newspaper headlines can give distorted and often negative messages about young people, according to young media representatives from SHAPE: young people and the youth crime debate, a coalition which includes NCB.

"When people see headlines about 'yob' incidents, they thinks it's young people causing trouble," said Sarah Roberts, 16, from Buxton, Derbyshire. "Often, though, the actual story is about things like litter or drunkenness, which are adult problems too."

The young media representatives were speaking to an invited audience of journalists and policy-makers at a seminar held on 16 April to debate the way in which the media portrays young offenders.

Philippe Chiarella, 16, illustrated how children and young people are frequently depicted either as "teen angels" or as "young thugs", while Lucy Walker, 17, explained how even positive stories can sometimes lead to negative press coverage.
