NCB Now: Study on teenagers in the media

1 min read
A group of young people, with help from NCB's research, evidence and evaluation department, are hard at work on an exciting project as part of the national Young Researcher Network. The group is set to explore media portrayal of teenagers and the impact of this on public perceptions of young people.

The Young Researcher Network (YRN) consists of 16 organisations and aims to encourage active participation in youth-led research to help young people influence policy and practice.

The young researchers chose the topic of media portrayal as they felt it was a relevant issue facing youth today. Their literature review found that, while much research has been gathered on the subject of media and youth perception, few of the findings included the views of young people themselves or the views of journalists.

"We want this research to influence how young people are presented in the media," one young researcher said. "We also hope local and national government, campaigning groups and the media itself will be made aware of our findings."
