NCB Now: Youth public health research

2 mins read
Following a successful pilot, NCB has been funded to run a project that will involve young people in planning and conducting research on public health, including looking at the impact of cyberbullying on mental health.

NCB has been funded by the Wellcome Trust to run an innovative new project: Public Health, Education, Awareness, Research: Our Voices, Our Health (PEAR).

The project will involve young people in planning and conducting research on public health and young people. Despite there being a considerable body of research on this topic, young people's participation in the process has been minimal to date.

PEAR will entail two groups of young people from Leeds and London working with public health researchers and receiving training. There will also be a small sub-project on the impact of cyberbullying on young people's mental health as most of the research on bullying and mental health - and indeed most research on public health and young people - starts from an adult perspective. The areas that the young people hope to explore are: the differences between the experiences of young people in rural versus urban areas, the differences between the experiences of young people in state or private schools and whether cyberbullies actually consider themselves to be bullies.
