The National Youth Agency: Quality - Researching media portrayals of teenagers

The National Youth Agency has established the Young Researcher Network (YRN), a partnership with 15 youth organisations to value, support and encourage research led by young people. With the training phase complete, the 15 groups will research a range of different issues. In the fourth of our series of project profiles we take a look at a National Children Bureau research project that addresses the media's portrayal of teenagers. Although plenty of research has already been carried out on how young people are portrayed in the media, very little of it has taken the view of young people themselves into account. The NCB is leading a project that will assess the impact of media reporting on young people, and will also seek to persuade the media that young people are not the "feral youth" that they have often been described as.

Rarely does any aspect of the media report on the many positiveactivities undertaken by young people, concentrating only on anti-socialbehaviour and crime, reinforcing stereotypes about young people, as wellas instilling fear and misunderstanding among local communities.

This project will run sessions with young people to classify images andstories into positive, negative and neutral categories. These will actas prompts for focus groups with young people to explore their feelingson the subject, along with interviews with journalists and onlinesurveys. The report will be published in January with emphasis placed ongetting the message across to national and local government, campaigninggroups and the media. Email Louca-Mai Brady: lbrady@ncb.org.uk.
