NCB Now: Disabled children's right to access activities

1 min read
CDC is producing an information pack and web-based materials called My Rights, Your Responsibility: Your Child's Right to be Included.

These materials, developed primarily for parents of disabled children and young people, will provide information on the child's rights to access activities, community facilities and other services.

So often disabled children are told they cannot join in for reasons relating to health and safety and their impairment. These materials try to address those issues and what needs to be done to ensure that children can safely join in, while the organisation providing the activity meets its responsibilities in terms of health and safety.

The care needs of disabled children have become more complex in the past 10 to 20 years. However, health and safety should not be used as an excuse to prevent services becoming more inclusive, it should be used to ensure that risks are minimised and that we move towards a situation where all children are given the opportunities to join in activities that they would like to do. These materials will help parents in their aim to get services to risk assess to enable inclusion not exclusion.
