The population of children with complex health needs and disabilities isgrowing. These children are living longer and their expectations aboutquality of life and what they can achieve are also increasing. Thisprogress is at odds with the prevailing culture of our society, whichstill perceives disabled children to be of less value than otherchildren.

Some sections of the media have colluded with thispresumption in their reporting of this and similar cases. Rather thanconcentrating on the child or their rights the focus has been on the"burden" they place on their families and society.
