NCB Now: Comment -- The value of library services for the sector

1 min read
A recent report by the School Library Commission has found that the importance of school libraries has often been overlooked but that they should be incorporated into the mainstream of teaching.

The commission calls for the government to recognise the importance of libraries, and it is not just school libraries that need recognition. Every library has something to offer and in many, the collection of knowledge and expertise is unique. However, today it seems that libraries are regarded by some as outdated, as we become more reliant on accessing information online. Several childcare charities have closed their libraries in recent years and others have had to make tough decisions about the services they can continue to provide.

NCB's Library & Information Service has been providing access to a multi-disciplinary collection of resources relating to children and young people for more than 40 years. However, unlike other libraries this is not a static collection. The library continually adapts to new technologies to deliver its knowledge and expertise online, including our catalogue and other dissemination services, such as Children in the News. Now, we are contributing to NCB's Support Services programme by offering special packages to professionals, students and communities across the children and young people's sector.
