NCB NOW: COMMENT - Participation: adults still need to try harder

Are adults listening to young people enough? As a 15-year-old, I suppose I'm in a good position to answer this. But, then, perhaps I'm more used to speaking out than most - I'm a member of Young NCB's advisory group, and also a young representative on NCB's board. I'm also one of the few people my age to have been to 10 Downing Street.

I was one of 36 children's sector representatives invited to take part in Tony Blair's Big Conversation initiative back in January. It was an exhilarating day. Walking into Number 10 was intimidating but, after joining a group discussion on participation, I soon settled into a "conference groove" and felt I could say what I wanted.

Children's minister Margaret Hodge sat in on our discussion - as did Mr Blair, who took a seat right next to me. He spent about five minutes at each table before giving a closing speech which showed he'd clearly taken our views on board. I left Downing Street feeling I'd been listened to.
