BIG CONVERSATION: Downing Street opens doors to listen to children

Children's charities, head teachers, parents and young people were welcomed to 10 Downing Street last week in the latest stage of the Government's Big Conversation project.

The Big Conversation on Children focused on children, families and poverty, and featured brainstorming on six topics: reducing inequality and extending opportunity, the best start in life, raising educational aspiration, supporting parents, protecting children and involving young people.

Prime Minister Tony Blair listened to feedback from the discussion groups and said the points children had picked out were "things we have been talking about in Government". "You're saying that educational investment has to start at a very early age and continue throughout life," he stated. But he pointed out that Sure Start was limited to disadvantaged communities. "This is where you should start, but they need to be extended," he said.
