Cycling and Children and Young People: A policy review, by Tim Gill, looks at the evidence surrounding child cycling. It suggests that roaddanger and fear of crime have led to a dramatic fall in the distancescycled by under-16s, which over the last 20 years have reduced by 40 percent for boys and 50 per cent for girls.
The report argues that cycling is a comparatively safe mode of traveland that, mile per mile, child cyclists are about as safe as adults. Itmakes the case for introducing active measures to encourage children tocycle, including making the built environment more child and cyclefriendly, promoting cycling for fun and as a sport, and promotingcycling for girls.
