With British cycling success at the Commonwealth Games, the first stage of the Tour de France being held in England next year and plans to make the 2012 Olympics "the most cycle-friendly ever", cycling is booming.

The report makes a clear case for encouraging more young people to cycle, making the built environment more child- and cycle-friendly, and promoting cycling for girls.

Despite road safety fears reducing cycling by almost half in the past 20 years, a new generation of riders is being born. It is time for organisations that advocate for young people to engage in "reclaiming the streets" for cycling and walking. Cycle-friendly streets are child-friendly streets.
