Spaces to Play by Alison Clark and Peter Moss reports on a pilot study that worked with three- and four-year-olds in pre-school to explore their understanding and use of outdoor provision, in order to inform future planning.
Clark spoke at the event, explaining that a listening method called the Mosaic approach, which allows young children to create a picture of their lives, was used throughout the pilot.
This approach used accessible tools such as photography, that play to a child's strengths and are not reliant on the spoken or written word, to enable under-fives to contribute constructively to the decision-making process.
The conference, entitled Listening to young children's views on diet and exercise, looked at how adults can support young children in making decisions about healthy lifestyles.
