NCB Now: Baroness Kennedy celebrates NCB's achievements at summerreception

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC stepped down as president of NCB at thecharity's summer reception, held at the Queen Elizabeth II conferencecentre in London on 12 July.

Baroness Kennedy, one of the UK's leading criminal lawyers and a humanrights champion, has been NCB's president since 1997.

Talking at the reception she highlighted the charity's achievements overthe past seven-and-a-half years.

"During my time as president, NCB has gone from strength to strength,developing its work on an ever-growing range of issues," she said.

"Key to our success is our role both as a partnership and a membershiporganisation, which means we are well placed to bring togetherprofessionals and policy makers to address the interests of children andyoung people."

Among the specific achievements noted by Baroness Kennedy were NCB'sclose involvement in key policy developments, including the Every ChildMatters agenda, and the launch of Young NCB, the charity's youngmembers' programme.

Anne Sofer, chair of NCB, thanked Baroness Kennedy for her commitmentduring her term as president.

Beverley Hughes, children's minister, paid tribute to NCB's contributionto improving children and young people's lives, which she described as"tremendous".

The minister said the charity now has a crucial role to play inencouraging the cultural change needed to achieve the sector's ambitionsfor children and young people.

Al Aynsley Green, England's first children's commissioner, also spoke atthe event.
