National Youth Agency: Young people in trouble matter at conventionfor safer communities

Led and introduced by development officer, Pete Loewenstein, The Agency's mini-conference involved a morning of speakers and presentations, followed by an interactive workshop.

Tim Bateman, senior policy development officer at Nacro, raised the debate with his session, "Alternatives to custody: why we need them and what they are", in which he delivered some staggering statistics on the cost of custody and the rate of reoffending among incarcerated young people.

Michelle Blow, Nacro service manager, talked about differences between multiple and single interventions when working with young people at risk, relating her experiences with the Discus Project, a youth inclusion project in Manchester. This was followed by examples of positive interventions and case studies from Motiv8 chief executive Sarah Brennan, and Steve Crocker, head of Wessex youth offending services.
