National Youth Agency: Sounds Positive

1 min read
The National Youth Agency has worked with Learning Southwest to support its bid to the Big Lottery Fund for the Sounds Positive project, to promote a more positive media image for young people in the region. Project officer Suzannah Beament explains.

Sounds Positive is a brand new and exciting project that has been created as an answer to the frustrated cries of the 60 members of the Youth Parliament in the South West to combat the often negative perception of young people in the media.

In partnership with the UK Youth Parliament, Sounds Positive is co-ordinated by the Regional Youth Work Unit at Learning South West in Taunton, Somerset. The project will battle some of the popular misconceptions of the youth of today, sustained in the past by some media organisations who promoted more readily an image of young people in dark alleys sporting weapons and labelled as "yobs" and "hoodies". There are of course a great many young people who are labouring hard to help important causes and to make a difference, whose voices are often lost behind more sensationalist headlines.
