National Youth Agency: New coalition calls for fresh look at youth crime

1 min read
The National Youth Agency is one of some 40 organisations to sign up to a call for the tough rhetoric and policy on youth offending to end and for a fresh look to be taken on how to reduce offending figures.

The coalition has been brought together by Spirit Level Film, whose new film, The Fear Factory, will premiere at a screening on 1 March.

The Fear Factory looks at youth justice and the role of young people in society. It explores society's responsibility in dealing with youth at risk of offending or young offenders, putting forward the premise that a negative focus on young people and misunderstanding on how to deal with those on the edges of society leads to the creation of a conveyor belt into further offending.

Official and media responses have created what's been called "an arms race" on crime, the film claims, with each announcement trying to sound tougher than the next with little regard to the evidential methods of reducing crime and the fear of crime.
