National Children's Bureau: Young film makers gain life skills

A group of pupils from two East London secondary schools showcased their film making skills at a premiere event on 12 December 2005.

The young people from Hackney Free and Stoke Newington secondary schoolshave produced three short films exploring issues such as conflict,transition and choices.

One of the films focuses on how people express themselves and looks atalternative ways of resolving a situation. It follows the story of twogangs that use a dance competition to diffuse tension between thegroups.

With the assistance of production company, Mouth That Roars, the 14- to16-year-olds worked in groups to research, script and edit their videos.A training programme equipped them with skills such as problem solving,decision-making, communication and teamwork.

The film project was organised by the Learning Trust, Hackney and NCB aspart of the Make a Connection Life Skills programme. The programme,which is based in NCB's children's development department and funded byNokia, promotes the positive development of children and youngpeople.
