Film projects that put young people in the director's chair can be a great way of getting an individual or group to express themselves creatively. Tim Burke looks at websites that offer technical advice about film-making and ideas for projects.

The availability of digital camcorders, powerful home computers and easy-to-use software packages has made it simpler and cheaper for young people to make their own films.

The Co-operative is a major sponsor of young film-makers, taking the view that the process does not just impart useful technical skills and values such as teamwork and co-operation, but is an inspiring form of self-expression. The site www.youngfilm-makers.coop gives details of the Co-op's annual festival in October, but go to the Film-maker Info section for a series of useful information sheets that cover getting started, selecting your genre, making your film and getting it publicised. There's even a sheet giving tips on working with young people, focusing on the importance of supporting good team work.
