My Week - Pairing up wellies and Whitehall machines

1 min read
Friday: I pick my way through tents and sleeping bags in the hall.[QQ]Both sons have embraced the festival season and, despite experiencing difficulty in transferring laundry from bedroom to washing machine, they have commandeered the household supplies of wellies and beer.

Tuesday: Return of the festival-goers and their camouflage of sunburn and dirt. A parade of returned items reveals two missing wellies, and those left are not a pair.

I ponder the challenges of aligning the agenda of two large Whitehall machines as I join a Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families meeting on what we are learning about practice on the ground that helps to integrate services. Evidence suggests that local leadership is vital and joint posts help, but agendas need to line up too because two wellies won't make a pair!

Wednesday: Speakers at a Children's Health Promotion Programme conference remind me about the powerful evidence driving early years work. My social work training 30 years ago was big on early bonding between mothers and babies as the key to better lives. It is good to see the more recent emphasis on fathers - bonding with dads counts too.
