My Week - Insulting foreign guests for dummies

Monday: Morning coffee with the principal patron of the orchestra I chair. I report how impossible fundraising is in the current financial climate and that we've decided we have to cancel a concert planned for February.

He says he's standing by us. Thank God. I have nightmares about being hauled before the Charity Commission for fiscal imprudence with Beethoven.

Tuesday: I'm assisting the Centre for Social Justice (Iain Duncan Smith's outfit) with a report on imprisonment. Two colleagues come down to Bath to pay me a visit and discuss the report. The problem is that almost everything I favour depends on the shadow front bench supporting policies that will reduce the prison population, a highly unlikely outcome. However, I'm clear that we need to hive off all penal custody for children and young people from the Prison Service, which is a possibility.
