My Week - Let's hope Obama's reign isn't torturous

Monday: My diary indicates that this week I shall mostly be tied to my computer writing book reviews, of which I have four to do.

The texts sent to me suggest that academic scholarship is preoccupied with two big questions: how are our politicians to be responsive to the electorate without becoming ever more punitive and exclusionary? And, are the fears of the electorate in large measure the creation of our political elite?

My other thought is that a lot of the social science literature that has been written is already looking incredibly dated now that our economic system is collapsing and depression is setting in.

Tuesday: I chair the Bath Philharmonia management committee in the morning and afterwards attend the Bath Festival board, of which I'm a trustee.
