Monday: Dreadful signs of the times. I attend a trustees' meeting for an organisation that had better remain nameless.

A dramatic decline in investment income and a failure to secure corporate sponsorship in recent months has forced it to reduce to a skeleton staffing level for the foreseeable future.

It is not alone. The National Council for Voluntary Organisations thinks that a third of all the charities in the country could go under during the current recession. I suspect it will be a depression.

Tuesday: Visit London for a Barrow Cadbury Trust seminar on the treatment of young adults in the criminal justice system. There are about 20 of us taking part but, significantly, no one has bothered to come from the Ministry of Justice.
