Back Page: My week - The trials and tribulations of volunteering

Monday: Annual trustees' "away day", held in a rather nice church hall, for my local drugs and alcohol service.

We're an interesting bunch, prepared, like many trustees, to give up a lot of unpaid time because we believe in the service we're supporting. Who says volunteering is on the wane?

But we're preoccupied by the increasingly competitive market in which we operate and the fact we're entirely dependent for our contracts and income on local state commissioners, who change constantly. Tuesday: Work on my email backlog at home while a new central heating system is installed. I'm told our gas bill will be 30 per cent lower. Later, a committee meeting for our local orchestra - how I love the amateur impresario bit - before seeing There Will be Blood at the cinema. More impressive than enjoyable. Too long and a bit one-dimensional.
