My life: Tara Brown, 17, London

1 min read
Over the summer I tripped and fell into an internship at the National Portrait Gallery via the Global Graduates Museums and Galleries scheme for "gifted and talented" young people. By fell I mean it happened by accident - I applied but didn't expect to get in.

The programme aims to get more ethnic minorities into the museum sector, although it wasn't easy to get onto. First, I completed an applicationform and then I went through a gruelling interview.

For two weeks in August I travelled to Leicester Square everyday, working with curators, conservationists, exhibitionists, publishers andmarketers.

I worked in lots of different departments and did various thingsincluding a presentation on how to make the National Portrait Gallerybetter for young people.

I loved every second of it; every morning on the tube I looked throughmy notes, every afternoon I stayed late, and every night I was exhaustedbut exhilarated.

It has been a fabulous experience, which I hope to build on. Who knowswhere I'll be in 10 years' time?
