My Life: Helen Walker*, 16, Tyneside

1 min read
I was born deaf. My parents didn't find out until I was six months old.

The doctor recommended I have a cochlear implant fitted. This meant anoperation to place an implant behind my ear making it possible for me tohear some sounds.

Once I had it, it was awful and noisy. I'm used to it now but I wish I'dnever had it done. I think I should have had a choice. My parents wantedme to have the operation because they thought it would help me learn totalk, but I can't, I just use sign language. It's a waste of time; mymate has an implant and he can hear and talk fine but I don't find it soeasy. Everyone is different.
